The 2016 election showed us the alarming results of failing to properly get out the vote. As the former CIA Director, John Brennan, stated “It should be clear to everyone Russia brazenly interfered in our 2016 presidential election process.” As investigations continue regarding possible involvement between U.S. and Russian officials, a cloud of doubt hangs over our belief that our fundamental democratic rights to fair and honest elections are intact .
Complicating matters are on-going, and very successful, attempts by Republicans (including the President) to suppress targeted voters. The undermining of voters’ rights is multi-pronged and includes the wide-spread use of vulnerable electronic voting machines.
Our democracy cannot function properly without a legitimate electoral system. It’s a depressing thought to wonder and worry about the legitimacy of this most basic right of “choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections.”
We must soldier on and stay aware and fight the injustices outlined above in every peaceful and lawful way possible. And we must continue to register people to vote and get them to the polls. We also must counsel voters on the need to avoid “No Party Affiliation” registration so they can participate in the primaries. We will do our part to make sure our country is a democracy we can be proud of.
If you’d like to get involved with our campaign for fair elections and to “get out the vote,” please contact us here.
Also, please make sure to see the movie “Hacking Democracy” ASAP, either at home or at our June event. It’s very important to see what we’re up against in our fight for fair and transparent elections.
